The Youngest Member, Never the Smallest Presence
Jeon Jung-kook joined BTS as its youngest member — the "maknae" — but was never treated like a minor character in the group's story. A powerhouse vocalist and dancer, he became the member most consistently pointed to as BTS's most naturally gifted all-rounder, earning the nickname "Golden Maknae" well before he'd released any solo music.
His 2023 debut solo album "GOLDEN" backed that reputation up commercially: the title track "Standing Next To You" and the album itself both spent 18 consecutive weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 and Billboard 200 respectively — a record-setting run for a K-pop solo act.
Enlisting at the Peak
In December 2023, Jungkook enlisted for South Korea's mandatory military service alongside fellow member Jimin, entering the 5th Infantry Division just as "GOLDEN" was still climbing charts — a deliberate choice to serve early rather than delay it further, even with his solo career at its highest point yet.
For 18 months, one of the most-streamed solo artists in the world put his career on pause entirely, a rite of passage every South Korean man faces regardless of fame.
June 11, 2025
Jungkook and Jimin were discharged together on June 11, 2025, greeted by fans who had traveled from as far as Mexico and Brazil — completing the last stretch of BTS's staggered military service and clearing the way for a full seven-member reunion later that summer.
Even during his service, his music kept working: "GOLDEN" tracks were recognized among the year's most-performed songs, and reports of a fast-moving global comeback began circulating well before he'd even taken off the uniform.
