Fluent in Three Languages, Fluent on Camera
Kim Jennie spent part of her childhood in New Zealand before returning to Korea to train — a background that shows up in her easy, fluent English and a stage presence that never seemed to need translating for global audiences.
As BLACKPINK's main rapper and a lead vocalist, she stood out immediately for a delivery that felt unbothered rather than showy, which became its own kind of signature.
"SOLO", and Being First
In 2018, Jennie released "SOLO" — the first solo single from any BLACKPINK member. It became a genuine hit in its own right rather than a side note to the group, and set an unusually high bar for what a member's individual project could do commercially.
That head start mattered. By the time the rest of K-pop had caught up to the idea of idols running serious solo careers alongside their groups, Jennie already had a proven track record of doing exactly that.
Odd Atelier, Ruby, and What Came After
Jennie later founded her own label, Odd Atelier, and released her debut studio album "Ruby" in March 2025 — her first full-length solo project, arriving alongside a solo tour built specifically around it.
She followed it, roughly a year and a half later, with the digital EP "Fallen Angel" — a sign that for Jennie, the solo lane isn't a detour from BLACKPINK, it's a parallel, permanent career she has no plans of pausing.
