Honolulu, Hawaii — Breakthrough: 2010

Chapter I

A Vegas Kid Who Studied the Old Masters

Peter Gene Hernandez grew up performing in his family's Waikiki revue as a child, doing Elvis impressions before he was ten — an upbringing that explains why his music has always sounded like it belongs to no single decade.

By the time "Just the Way You Are" broke in 2010, he'd already absorbed Motown, funk, reggae, and soul closely enough to write and produce nearly all of it himself, rather than simply performing songs handed to him.

Chapter II

Silk Sonic, and Refusing to Chase Trends

Rather than following pop's shift toward stripped-down, algorithm-friendly production, Bruno doubled down on live instrumentation and old-school showmanship — a bet that paid off spectacularly with Silk Sonic, his 1970s-soul side project with Anderson .Paak, which swept the Grammys' top categories in 2022.

His 2024 duet with Lady Gaga, "Die With a Smile," became one of the biggest global hits of the decade, proof that his instinct for pure, unfiltered melody still outperforms whatever's algorithmically trending.
